Improv, Student Choreography

& Photogenic

IMPROVISATION CATEGORY

The Improv Category is HIGHLY recommended in the dance industry as it is becoming more and more popular and required amongst many, if not all auditions outside of the Dance Studios. Even some dance exams require this and it also builds confidence in your dancers.

  • We hold this at one time during the competition weekend. An email will be sent to Studio Directors for each Regional Venue to let them know when this category will be held on or before the Tentative Schedule is sent.

  • We select 3-5 MAINSTREAM songs for dancers to select from that would cover all genres of dance (except traditional Ballet)

  • We will call all the dancers entered in the Improv Category backstage before we commence this category. They will have 5 min backstage where we will play the 60-90 second edit for each of the three for them to select from.

  • The dancer will then let our MC backstage know if they are doing number 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5. The dancer selects the discipline and which song they prefer at that time. They will then go on stage in DECENDING age order with the song they choose from our selection and doing the discipline they are most comfortable with performing (we want the littles to have a little more time to get a feel for what they are to do - especially the more novice dancers).

  • The judges will critique them on their ability as an IMPROV soloist. It is 75% performance and 25% technical. We are looking to see how well they are able to perform to a piece un-choreographed. It is their ability to feel the music and do what comes natural to them that we want to see.

  • WE ALLOW DANCERS TO ENTER THIS UNTIL THE FINAL SCHEDULE HAS BEEN COMPLETED.
